Description
What does it take to move the racial inequity/equity needle? What’s behind the needle that keeps it from moving?
Capital Region ESD 113 is attempting to answer these two crucial questions in a new pilot program designed to do three things:
1. increase knowledge about racial difference,
2. examine and explore feelings about racial difference, and
3. develop capabilities to work with racial difference.
The purpose of this pilot, which is geared toward school district teacher leaders and administrators within the Capital Region Educational Service District, is to draw attention to racial inequities in the early learning system in our region and to develop blended learning modules to reduce these inequities. The pilot will use Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI), which is a cross-culturally validated and reliable instrument that examines how we respond to differences. Namely, IDI reveals the degree to which we are in denial, defense, minimization, acceptance and integration of difference.
We all treat people according to how we see them. It’s crucial that school leaders and teachers understand racial and ethnic differences to ensure success for every student.
Dr. David Whitfield and Natalie A. Mattson will be presenting.
