Description
**This event is a virtual synchronous Zoom screening of FISH WAR**
FISH WAR Produced by North Forty Productions and Northwest Treaty Tribes Media, released April 17, 2024
FISH WAR highlights the violent struggle faced by Indigenous nations to exercise their treaty-protected right to harvest salmon in the Pacific Northwest. The protests led to a federal court case, U.S. v. Washington, that changed the way the state and treaty tribes care for the environment. The Boldt Decision in this case went all the way to the Supreme Court.
Using historical footage and first-person accounts, the film depicts the often brutal attacks on tribal fishers in the 1970s, including Nisqually Fisherman Billy Frank Jr. To this day, his son Nisqually Chairman Willie Frank III continues to fish where his father and grandfather did. While on the river, he tells the story of how his father was arrested about 50 times – getting out of jail, going fishing, and getting arrested again.
Over Zoom, participants will:
Understand historical context of Native American rights
Understand cultural impacts of the Boldt Decision of 1974
Gain perspective from first-person encounters
