Teaching students with dyslexia requires an understanding of how the English written language is structured to represent speech. Beyond understanding the basics of creating sound/symbol knowledge and the ability to use that knowledge quickly and accurately, teachers need to know common orthographic patterns and the influence of morphological knowledge on students phonic decoding. In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the basics of teaching students common sound/symbol correspondences and some the most common spellings of the 44 sounds of English. They will learn the 6 syllable types, the 4 ways to divide words into syllables, in order of commonality, and some historical and linguistic explanations for how syllables are spelled. Additionally, participants will learn about the morphological features of words and how they interact with orthography and phonology. Participants will have hands-on opportunities to learn about and practice activities that measure and strengthen students’ emergent literacy skills.
