Description

This field-based workshop will focus on equitable solutions currently being implemented for the health of Whatcom County watersheds. The Teaching for the Climate Collaborative will guide participants through classroom-ready STEM activities that connect students to the outdoors and illustrate how climate change is affecting different stakeholders and ecosystems. Tribal partners will share their expertise and a variety of take-home resources will set teachers up to integrate workshop learning with the Since Time Immemorial Curriculum. 


Participants will be sent a survey before the course to confirm registration, gather additional information, and secure a spot. 

Stipend: $100

Funding is provided by the Washington State Legislature through the ClimeTime proviso.

10:35 - 11:00 Indigenous Story - connection to salmon/water?

11:00 - 11:20 Introduce the problem - Threatened species/habitat loss

  • Development/land changes, human impacts, climate change

  • Small table brainstorm with before and after photos 

11:20 - 11:50 Working Lunch (2 focus topic rooms available)

11:50 - 12:35 Activity: Catch Me If You can by NSEA

12:35 -  12:45 Identify Solutions

  • Restoration

  • Co-management structure/tribes/align work with regional priorities 

  • Shared goals/community based approach

  • Increased natural buffer/water storage/climate adaptation

12:45 - 1:00 Wrap up - surveys, gratitude
