This one-day, interactive, train-the-trainer workshop focuses on the USDA Final Rule: Meal Patterns Consistent With the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This training is designed for directors, supervisors, lead staff, or others with training responsibilities. Throughout the workshop, facilitators will demonstrate adult learning techniques and provide tools to create and implement staff training on Final Rule changes, such as:
- Added sugar limits
- Meat/meat alternates at breakfast
- Substituting vegetables for fruits at breakfast
- Beans, peas, and lentils
- Nuts and seeds
- The Buy American Provision
- and more!
We will cover common administrative review findings, identify necessary menu planning or procedural changes, review how menu substitutions impact crediting, discuss the geographic preference flexibility to increase local purchasing, and spend some time planning staff training.

- Identify five meal pattern strategies that have the greatest impact on domestic food purchases.
- Develop a staff training plan for meeting Final Rule requirements.
